Good afternoon from Australia,

I apologise for writing in English instead of Dutch. If this is not allowed then I understand.

Over a month ago I "updated" Aldfaer, I'm afraid I don't remember what the update was called, but it had been coming up every time I opened Aldfaer. However, after this update, I have not been able to use Aldfaer.

Firstly, when trying to input data (e.g. add a new person, or edit an existing person), whatever I write reverts to one particular name and one particular place (which is indeed an ancestor of mine and their place of birth).

This prevents me from using it at all. Attempting to generate reports does not work either. Additionally, there is now a 5-10 second delay each time a new person or page is clicked on, with a small watch symbol. Previously this was instantaneous. Even if the data input and reports were working, it would be very difficult to use the program with such delays.

I have used Aldfaer for 5 years and absolutely love it. I have so much work on it as well. It is a shame that I can't use it at the moment.

I hope maybe this is a common problem, or someone else has had the same issues. I will be extremely grateful for any advice on how I might be able to fix it.

First of all, which Windows are you running on the PC
It it's XP, then this new version Aldfaer 7.0 cannot be used until the next update to Version 7.1.

From your description it appears that you have an important number op persons in your data base AND at the same time a large number of groups.

Furthermore, I presume that you used the default installation of Aldfaer in C:\Aldfaer and the data files in C:\....\Documents\Aldfaer. Is that so ?

According to the time stamp in your message, it was placed at 13:33 hrs Dutch time, I estimate that this is, depending east or west Australia 23:33.

For info, when the update was implemented, Aldfaer first made a security copy so we can always fall back to version 6.2. You said you started about 5 years ago, so that was version 4.2 which used a data base structure identical to version 6.2

Hello Ruud, and thank you.

You are right that I have the default installation of Aldfaer with that file name. But for the last 2.5 years it has been on my Mac, I initially installed it on Windows but then installed it on my Mac and transferred the files with no problem. Maybe there is an issue with the new update and Macs? I understand Aldfaer is not really designed for them.

You're also correct about there being a large number of persons. Maybe this causes the delay? It is strange as before the update it was still instant, no delays or waiting time at all. (And of course have not added any new data since then).

On your last point, does this mean we can revert back to a version where it was still working?

I'm afraid that you have made an update which is not suitable to run on your machine. It is recognized that this new version doesn't run properly under XP, Vista and Mac. In case you are using W10 your data has been converted to suit the data format required for Aldfaer 7.0

In general you should not install in C:\Program files nor use any kind of cloud service such as OneDrive, Dropbox and others.

I personally think the best thing you can do is to return to the previous version 6.2

Could I ask, how do I return to the version 6.2? Am I able to do this myself?

I'm not a Mac user but I think this is the downloadlink Aldfaer Mac >
I would first rename the folder C:\Aldfaer into C:\Aldfaer70 and than install the download.
